Thanks to everyone who’s been confronting art reposters when they see them <3 I really appreciate it. I can’t possibly take on all of them myself so it helps a lot having others who are looking out for these types of things!
ART REPOSTING is taking an image and creating your own post for it WITHOUT artist credit. A lot of people find these images uncredited on other sites and create their own posts without including credit to the original artists. You may not even realize there’s anything wrong with this, but if you are doing this you are unfortunately perpetuating a practice that harms artists!
What can you do if you find art that you want to share but you don’t know who made it? Well, I personally try to make it easy by including my URL right there in the image in the form of an attractive and unobtrusive icon. PLEASE do not crop it out or otherwise remove it, that’s what we call a DICK MOVE. So if you want to share some art you found, check it for a signature or URL on the image! If you can’t find one of those, a REVERSE GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH may be able to help - all you have to do is drag and drop the image into the search bar and it will give you a list of websites where it appears, making it more likely for you to find the creator!
If neither of these methods work, posting while explaining that you are not the creator, and asking for anyone who DOES know to please tell you so that you can add credit, is usually acceptable, as long as you do in fact intend to add credit as soon as you find out whose it is. If someone contacts you calling you out for reposting art, don’t get mad or defensive - just update the credit on your post to include the artist’s name and preferably a link! It’s good manners and shows respect for the people who make the things that you enjoy!
If you see someone reposting, there’s no need to be aggressive or mean about it - just supply the name of the artist and suggest that they update the credit, or provide a link to the original post where it can be reblogged.
Following these simple guidelines will make it EASIER for artists to supply you with images for your enjoyment. Please respect them when you share those images! Thank you <3
Also if you use Chrome, you should be able to right click and do a google image search. If it’s not coming up in the context menu you can get the Search Google for this Image extension for your browser (whether it’s Chrome or not), or you can use the RevEye Image Search or TinEye Image Search extensions. There are probably a bunch of other ones too, applicable for your browser and you can find them with a really simple, quick google.
So there really is no excuse at all.
Also, people (in particular who run comics tumblrs) who post art from DeviantArt? No matter how much you think it is, tagging a post with the creator’s DeviantArt and not linking to the artist in the body and/or in the image source? IS NOT GIVING CREDIT FOR ART YOU ARE POSTING. You might as well not even be doing anything at all, that’s how utterly, utterly useless it is. Because the second, or third, or hundredth person who reblogs the post when they’re not reblogging directly from the original post is not going to have a clue at all who the original artist is.
If you see someone who does this, please call them on it and please do not reblog from their tumblr if they haven’t sourced the art.
More useful words/resources! Thank you!
